This chart gives a general view of what goes into the different stages from Raw Materials to end of use. At various points additional energy is required for processing and transportation, and different types of Green House Gases are released or avoided. Recycling has costs too though, and some times it's more efficient to throw something away. Yakima [not a Waste Management area] recently quit recycling glass. Glass is heavy, needs sorting and can contaminate other recycled material. No local manufacturer can use it, it's not worth hauling it to a distant plant, and by not collecting it they avoid the contamination issue, which reduces the value of other 'products'. And the Green House Gas reduction value of recycling glass is actually pretty low, see the next slide.
